The majority of these that were manufactured were purchased by the U.S. Army and issued to Union cavalry troops during the Civil War. Carved into the stock are inspector stamps (“R.H.K.W.” for Robert Henry Kirkland Whiteley, Capt.; “E.F.” for E. Ferrar; and “LAB” for Lester A. Beardslee, Lt. Cdr.).
